Ingredients
  

For the Onion Petals

  • 1 large onion Preferably sweet or red onion
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs You can use whole wheat for a healthier option
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • to taste Salt and pepper

For the Copycat Bloomin' Onion Sauce

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon horseradish
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oil in a deep fryer or large pot over medium heat.
  • Cut the onion in half and slice it into petals, aiming for about eight pieces.
  • In one bowl, whisk together the flour, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • In another bowl, beat the eggs and mix in the milk.
  • Dip each onion petal into the egg mixture, then into the flour mixture, ensuring they're well coated.

Cooking

  • Once the oil is hot (around 350°F), carefully place the coated petals in the oil.
  • Fry for about 2-4 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  • Remove and drain on paper towels.

Making the Sauce

  • In a bowl, mix together mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, and garlic powder until smooth.

Notes

These onion petals can be made ahead and stored in the fridge; reheat in the oven for crispiness. Feel free to customize with different spices and sauces for dipping.
