Ingredients
  

Potato Ingredients

  • 4-5 medium Yukon Gold or russet potatoes, thinly sliced For best flavor, use fresh potatoes.

Onion Ingredients

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 packet (1 oz) French onion soup mix

Creamy Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter Olive oil for a healthier option.
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream Can be substituted for Greek yogurt.

Cheese Ingredients

  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese Can substitute with cheddar.

Seasoning and Garnish

  • Salt and black pepper (to taste)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish) Dried parsley can be used in a pinch.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, combine the sliced potatoes and onions.
  • Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle in the French onion soup mix. Toss to coat.

Layering

  • Arrange the potato and onion mixture in the greased baking dish.
  • Pour the heavy cream evenly over the mixture.
  • Layer the shredded cheese on top.

Baking

  • Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  • After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for another 15-20 minutes until golden brown and bubbly.
  • Let cool for a few minutes, then garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

This dish can be prepared ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours before baking. Leftovers can last in the fridge for 3-4 days. Reheat in the oven for the best flavor.
