  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced The star of the show!
  • 2 tablespoons butter For caramelization.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil For sautéing the onions.
  • 4 medium potatoes, sliced Can substitute with sweet potatoes.
  • 1 cup grated cheese (like Gruyère or Swiss) Feel free to use your favorite melty cheese.
  • 1 cup heavy cream Adds creaminess to the dish.
  • Salt and pepper to taste For seasoning.

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Melt the butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the sliced onions and cook until golden and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in a baking dish.
  • Top with half of the caramelized onions and half of the grated cheese.
  • Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients.
  • Pour the heavy cream over the layered potatoes and season with salt and pepper.
  • Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until bubbling and golden.
  • Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Prep onions in advance for quicker cooking. This dish can be assembled ahead, refrigerated, and baked when ready. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
