  • 1 cup Buttermilk or milk with lemon juice

For the Coating

  • 1 cup Flour substitute with gluten-free flour for a gluten-free option
  • 1 tbsp Paprika consider using smoked paprika for extra flavor
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 tsp Onion Powder
  • 0.5 tsp Cayenne Pepper adjust according to taste
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Pepper
  • 2 medium Sweet Onions (like Vidalia)
  • as needed Cooking Spray/Oil for crispy exterior

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Cut the tops off the sweet onions and peel them, then slice them into blooming petals.
  • Soak the onion petals in buttermilk for 10-15 minutes.

Coating

  • Whisk together flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper in a bowl.
  • Dredge each onion piece into the flour mix, patting them down lightly. Spray with cooking oil.

Cooking

  • Set your air fryer to 375°F and cook the coated onions for 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Serving

  • Allow to cool slightly before serving with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

You can prepare ahead by soaking the onions in advance. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to two days. They reheat well in the air fryer.
